in cooperation with the University of Hawai’i
“Stories of China’s First Premier, Zhou Enlai —
reflecting back, and looking forward
to China in the 21st Century”
This lively discussion considers Zhou Enlai, the first Premier of modern China, and how to connect his extraordinary life story with our challenging times. Historic video, photos and interviews are presented.
What lessons can be learned, from this student and leader of the Revolution, that will help us to understand the China of 2021 — who its people are, how they see themselves, and where they are going?
We present several key stories about Zhou Enlai — his family, youth, and life as a student-writer during pre-Revolutionary days; his role in the Xi’an Incident, a pivotal series of events during the liberation wars; his writing and promotion of the Five Principles of Peace, which were key to the influence of the Non-Aligned Movement; and his moral leadership as premier and foreign minister, seeking the middle way of peace.
Each story features audio-visual elements and historic recordings.
There are four key speakers: Zhou Xiaofang, co-founder of the Zhou Enlai Peace Institute in America, born in Beijing and grand-niece of the former Premier; Michael North, also a co-founder, a businessman, researcher and student of Zhou Enlai’s example; Elisabet Sahtouris, European-American evolutionary biologist and one of the first American teachers to visit Beijing, in the early 1970’s; and Ma Mengjia, a young woman leader of the environmental and international students in Shanghai, founder of the TEDx program in the world’s largest city.
We leave ample time in the program for questions and discussion, and provide links to support materials for reference after the seminar.
