Condolences
on the passing of Zhou Erliu

Comrade Zhou Erliu, the nephew of China’s first Premier Zhou Enlai, passed away on December 6, 2023 in Shanghai. He was 94 years old.

Born in December 1929, he joined the Revolution in June 1949. Among his many services to the growing young nation of China, he was a consultant to the Zhou Enlai Research Center of Nankai University; director of the China Social Development Research Center; vice-president of Peking University and professor at the School of Economics; and cultural counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom.

He held director-level positions in the International Department of the Central Committee, and the International Cultural Affairs Commission.

In recent years, he wrote his autobiography, titled “My Uncle Zhou Enlai” — his inside story of growing up in the French Concession in Shanghai, the Cultural Revolution, the Nanchang Uprising, the Chinese Civil War and Richard Nixon’s visit to China in 1971. This important book is available here:

Comrade Zhou Erliu maintained high moral character, and sustained the tradition of the Zhou family of integrity and hard work throughout his life. Although his body has passed away, his memory will last forever.

Deeply mourning the passing of my uncle, Zhou Erliu.

In my childhood memories, my father Zhou Huazhang often mentioned Uncle Erliu. I don’t remember his voice, smile or appearance, but the books he left to us are deeply imprinted in my mind.

Uncle Erliu is the pride of his generation and a role model for our extended Zhou family. Uncle Erliu was a seasoned diplomat, who made positive contributions to peaceful diplomacy between China and Britain, and friendship between the two nations.

Today, we remember Uncle Erliu and will continue to follow in the footsteps of the older generation. We renew his commitment to China and to peace, moving forward vigorously with a new generation.
